With their convenient cargo room, versatile performance, and agile handling, compact SUVs, like the Ford Escape and Chevy Equinox, are great options. So, which one is right for you?

Hixson Ford Alexandria finds out. We put this 2021 Ford Escape vs. Chevy Equinox comparison together to show drivers in the Alexandria, Pineville, and Castor Plunge, LA, areas what they have to offer.

Interior Dimensions

The 2021 Ford Escape offers enough space for you and your whole crew to kick back and relax. Its open design makes it the perfect SUV for your daily commute, errand running, and going on adventures over the weekend. It offers seating for five, a large trunk, and folding seats that can help you pack more.

The Chevy Equinox also comes with folding seats and seating for five, but it doesn't offer quite as much space. Not only will taller drivers feel cramped behind the wheel, but your passengers may feel like the backseat is a tight squeeze. Plus, the trunk doesn't offer nearly as much cargo room.

Safety & Capability

Whether you're taking the kids to school or going out for happy hour, the Ford Escape is prepared to keep you safe. It protects the interior with an airbag system and includes technology that'll give you more awareness while you drive. Ford Co-Pilot360â„¢ comes standard on every trim level and helps prevent accidents with the following driver-assistive features:

  • BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Auto High-Beam Headlamps
  • Rear View Camera

The Chevy Equinox comes with some similar safety features, however, a blind spot monitor is not one of them. This useful safety feature isn't even available on the first few trim levels.

Additionally, the 2021 Escape is also better prepared for tough driving conditions. Its available all-wheel drive system makes it more adaptable with standard Selectable Drive Modes, like Slippery and Eco modes. Though the Chevy also offers all-wheel drive, it doesn't give you any selectable driving modes.

Performance Specs

With four sporty powertrains to choose from, the 2021 Ford Escape is a great choice for your getaways. For example, its standard 1.5L EcoBoost® I-3 engine lives up to its name with an EPA-estimated 28 city and 34 highway MPG.

For an even more efficient drive, you can choose between a couple of hybrid powertrains. The plug-in hybrid is easy to charge, while the 2.5L Atkinson-cycle hybrid powertrain can get up to an EPA-estimated 44 city and 37 highway MPG.

If you want to feel like you're escaping, though, you'll want to hit the road in the available 2.0L EcoBoost® I-4 engine. It accelerates with ease thanks to a whopping 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. With all that power, you can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

Unfortunately, the 2021 Chevy Equinox doesn't offer any hybrid options. The only engine that's available is a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder that only gets up to 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. With its smaller output, it can only haul up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. It also needs to stop for gas more often due to its EPA-estimated 26 city and 31 highway MPG.
